Many players still don't know about Mahjong Tiles. We are preparing a draft version of this guide for them so they don't have to worry about it anymore. We will discuss everything we know about Mahjong tiles. So let's get started right away, without any further delay.

All Tiles In Mahjong

Tiles in Mahjong games usually vary depending on location. Although sets from the United States or Southeast Asia may have additional tiles in the form of flowers or Jokers, they generally have a minimum of 136 tiles, most commonly 144. Some sets also include blank tiles with which owners can replace those that are damaged or missing.

Mahjong tile categories

There are six different categories of Mahjong tiles: colored tiles, red tiles, honor tiles, flower tiles, animal tiles and joker tiles.

Suitable tiles

Colored tiles are also known as number tiles and have a color and rank. With rankings ranging from one to nine, there are three money-focused suites. Each rank and suit combination consists of four tiles, for a total of 108 suit tiles (36 suit tiles). A matched tile is determined by its rank and then its color. The end tiles are collectively known as the ones and nines of each suit. A meld can be created from matching tiles.

Red Tiles

The Japanese set is the only one with red tiles. They do not have four duplicates and appear as red versions of the tiles of each color. Red 5 tiles for the remaining colors followed the Red 5 Circle, which debuted in the 1970s. Red 1 and 9 later appeared, although they are much less common in sets than red 5. They were followed by red 3 and 7. If certain criteria are met, the rare red and white dragon can also be used as a wild card.

  • These plaques can be voluntarily excluded.
  • One duplicate of its regular, non-red counterpart is removed from the game when it is introduced.
  • When combined, they increase the score.
  • Since flower tiles are not often used in Japanese Mahjong, these sets usually do not include the Four Gentlemen flower tiles to make room for the red tiles.

Honor Tiles

Honor tiles are created in layouts, just like matched tiles. However, they lack rank and color. They are further divided into two categories. These two categories are as follows:

Wind

There are four Wind tokens in the game:

  • East
  • West
  • Midnight
  • South

Dragons

There are three types of dragon tiles:

Floral tiles

IN mahjong melds, Flower plates are not used. Once drawn, they are set aside and the player can then draw again, but from the dead wall. These tiles often contain stylized images of flowers in various shades. However, there are also additional, non-floral motifs that vary depending on the set.

Apartment

If a set includes flower tiles, it often consists of two quartets, each with a different color and label design. In regular Chinese sets, one quartet will have blue Arabic numerals and the other group will have red Chinese numerals. Each quartet has four separate tiles, each numbered 1 to 4 or clearly marked.

  • Seats are assigned numbers such as 1= East, 2= South, 3= West and 4= North.
  • If the number on the flowers is equal to the seat number, the winner's score is doubled.
  • There are advantages to collecting the entire quartet, however, and in some versions, collecting all the flowers results in an instant win.
  • A few games don't include them or view them as optional because they provide points for purely random events.

Animal tiles

The player's place is immediately matched to the animal token, which is unnumbered flowers. These tiles usually come in pairs and feature classical Chinese stories as their themes. If two tokens are collected in a pair or all animals are collected, payment is made immediately. The Thai and Malaysian four-player sets contain four pairs of animal tokens, compared to two pairs in the Singaporean sets.

Here are some of them:

  • Cat and mouse
  • Rooster and Centipede
  • Caishen and Sycee
  • Jiang Ziya and the fish
  • Liu Haichan and Jin Chan
  • The Dragon and the Blazing Pearl

Joker Tiles

Subject to regional restrictions, Joker tiles may be used as a replacement for any color or honor tile when laying your hand. Some Southeast Asian and Chinese mahjong varieties, especially Shanghainese mahjong, sometimes feature four jokers. Additionally, there are eight jokers in American Mahjong.

Common Unique Jokers:

  • Round joker
  • Joker character
  • Universal joker
  • Red jokers
  • Joker suit
  • Dragon joker
  • Wind joker
  • Floral joker
  • Respect the Joker

Limited Rank Jokers:

  • Terminal Joker: Replaces any one or nine colors.
  • 147 Joker: Replaces any one, four or seven suits.
  • 258 Joker: Replaces any two, five or eight suits.
  • 369 Joker: Replaces three, six, or nine of any suit.

Application

It can be a bit confusing to remember everything, but players can simply start with the meaning of the Mahjong tiles and then move on from there. After reading, players will be able to understand the Mahjong tiles to some extent as they will only be able to fully understand them if they play the actual game on best online casinos .

There are six different types of mahjong tiles and all of them are interesting. They also have subcategories, so it's better to learn them slowly.
